The rapid urbanization coupled with inadequate infrastructure has led to severe environmental degradation. Environmental engineers in Karachi play a pivotal role in mitigating these issues by designing sustainable waste management solutions, improving water treatment processes, and enforcing air quality regulations.
The primary sources of environmental stress in this region include untreated industrial effluents discharged into the Arabian Sea via stormwater drains, unregulated landfill sites such as Landhi Dumping Ground, and widespread reliance on untreated groundwater. This report focuses specifically on two critical areas: the chemical composition of soil samples taken from industrial peripheries and the microbiological safety of municipal water sources.
3.1 Sample Collection:
Soil samples were collected at a depth of 0-15 cm from five distinct locations along the Korangi Industrial Area boundary. These sites were chosen due to their proximity to chemical processing plants and textile dyeing units. Groundwater samples were extracted from tube wells in Block 4, North Nazimabad, an area known for chronic water shortages.
3.2 Laboratory Analysis:
Soil samples were analyzed for heavy metals including Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), and Chromium (Cr) using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). Groundwater samples underwent microbiological testing for Total Coliforms and E. coli, as well as chemical analysis for pH, TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), and hardness. All procedures followed the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater guidelines adapted by the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR).
The laboratory analysis yielded concerning results regarding environmental quality standards set by both national regulations and international benchmarks.
