This poster presentation outlines how biological sciences can be leveraged to mitigate environmental degradation in Lagos while promoting sustainable livelihoods.

Lagos State, with its unique geography comprising both mainland and island topography, is highly susceptible to flooding, sea-level rise, and pollution. The integration of biological expertise into policy-making is essential for creating resilient ecosystems that can support the millions of residents calling Nigeria Lagos home. This document argues that a proactive approach by biological scientists is not merely an academic exercise but a socio-economic imperative.

The primary aim of this academic inquiry is to map the intersection between biological science interventions and urban sustainability in Nigeria Lagos. Specifically, this presentation seeks to:

  • Evaluate Biodiversity Loss: Assess the current state of native flora and fauna in Lagos lagoon systems due to industrial discharge and waste mismanagement.
  • Promote Urban Agriculture: Demonstrate how biological principles can optimize hydroponics and vertical farming to enhance food security in high-density areas.
  • Enhance Public Health: Investigate the vector-borne disease dynamics (such as Malaria and Lassa fever) in relation to urban waste dumps and stagnant water bodies.
  • Risk Assessment:: Develop biological models for predicting flood impacts on ecological health using wetland vegetation analysis.
