This study employs a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative interviews with 50 working journalists in Kinshasa and a quantitative analysis of editorial policies across the top ten digital news platforms in the capital. The timeframe of data collection spans from 2019 to 2023, covering both the transitional government period and subsequent administrations.

A primary finding is that economic independence is severely compromised in DR Congo Kinshasa. Unlike their Western counterparts, many journalists in Kinshasa suffer from irregular salaries or rely heavily on "consultancy" fees paid by political actors or NGOs.

  • Precarity: Over 60% of respondents reported relying on side hustles to survive, creating potential conflicts of interest.
  • Censorship via Poverty: Self-censorship is often a survival mechanism. Journalists frequently avoid sensitive topics involving high-level corruption or military misconduct due to fear of losing meager contracts or facing physical threats.

The rise of the internet has reshaped journalism in DR Congo Kinshasa. While radio remains king, digital platforms offer new avenues for investigative reporting.

The legal environment in Kinshasa has seen fluctuations. While the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, specific laws regarding cybercrime have been utilized to detain journalists for legitimate reporting activities. The physical safety of a journalist in DR Congo remains a critical concern, with several high-profile cases illustrating the dangers embedded in investigative journalism.
