Abstract

The rapid urbanization of Sri Lanka's commercial capital, Colombo, presents a unique architectural paradox. This Poster Presentation academic study investigates the enduring legacy and contemporary adaptation of traditional Mason techniques within the context of modern Sri Lanka Colombo. By analyzing historical preservation efforts alongside new structural engineering integrations, this research highlights how the fundamental principles of Masonry have evolved to meet both aesthetic heritage requirements and modern seismic safety standards.

The city of Colombo, situated on the western coast of Sri Lanka Colombo, stands as a testament to centuries of cultural exchange and architectural innovation. From the Portuguese fortifications to British colonial infrastructure, stone masonry has played a pivotal role in shaping the skyline. However, contemporary urban development often threatens these historical narratives with rapid concrete construction. This study aims to re-evaluate the relevance of traditional Mason methods in modern Sri Lanka Colombo architecture.

In this Poster Presentation academic framework, we explore how "Mason"—representing both the craft and its philosophical approach to materiality—can serve as a bridge between colonial history and sustainable future development. The primary objective is to demonstrate that respecting historical Mason techniques is not merely an act of nostalgia but a viable strategy for sustainable urban resilience in Sri Lanka Colombo.

To achieve a comprehensive understanding, this research employed a mixed-methods approach suitable for an academic inquiry into urban heritage.

First, archival analysis was conducted in the National Archives of Sri Lanka to trace the evolution of Mason specifications from 1500 CE to the present day. Second, field surveys were carried out across key districts in Sri Lanka Colombo, including Pettah and Fort, where traditional Mason buildings coexist with high-rise developments.

Additionally, structural engineers specializing in heritage restoration provided technical evaluations of existing Mason structures. These findings were compiled to form the basis of this Poster Presentation academic review, focusing on durability, cost-effectiveness, and cultural significance within the specific geographic context of Sri Lanka Colombo.

The analysis yielded several critical insights regarding the integration of Mason practices in modern contexts:

The Poster Presentation academic findings suggest that urban planners and developers in Sri Lanka must collaborate with traditional artisans to create hybrid structures that honor the past while securing the future.

Ultimately, redefining "Mason" within the context of Sri Lanka Colombo involves moving beyond mere replication of old styles to understanding the underlying structural and aesthetic philosophies. This approach ensures that Sri Lanka Colombo remains a city where history is respected through modern innovation.
