A Sociotechnical Analysis of Informal Automotive Repair Ecosystems
in a Megacity Environment

In the bustling metropolis of Nigeria Lagos, the automotive landscape is defined by a complex interplay of infrastructure challenges and entrepreneurial resilience. At the heart of this ecosystem stands "The Mechanic." This poster presentation explores how The Mechanic serves not merely as a repair technician, but as an essential node in Lagos's socio-economic network. As one of Africa's most populous cities, Nigeria Lagos presents unique logistical and cultural dynamics that shape the practice and perception of The Mechanic.

This study aims to:
  • Analyze the operational workflows of informal auto repair units in Nigeria Lagos.
  • Evaluate the impact of The Mechanic on daily mobility and local economies.
  • Assess technological adaptation strategies employed by The Mechanic amidst resource constraints.

The study utilized mixed-methods approaches across key districts in Nigeria Lagos. We conducted:
  • Ethnographic Observation: Spending over 40 hours observing The Mechanic at work.

  • Semi-Structured Interviews:: Conducted with forty-five (45) mechanics operating in Nigeria Lagos.
  • Surveys: : Administered to two hundred (200) vehicle owners relying on local repair services.

The environment in Nigeria Lagos poses severe constraints on The Mechanic:
  • Poaching and Trust Issues: : Theft of genuine parts by staff remains a major concern for vehicle owners.
  • Skill Gap:: There is a widening gap between traditional mechanical skills and modern electronic engine management systems. Training institutions in Nigeria Lagos often lag behind technological advancements.

  • Infrastructure:: Poor road networks in Nigeria Lagos exacerbate vehicle wear and tear, creating unsustainable workloads for 'The Mechanic'.

This presentation highlights that 'The Mechanic' is indispensable to the functioning of Nigeria Lagos. To enhance efficiency:
  • Vocational Training: : Government and NGOs should collaborate to update curricula in vocational centers across Nigeria Lagos.
  • Digital Integration:: Encouraging The Mechanic to adopt basic digital inventory and diagnostic tools can improve transparency.

We thank all the Mechanics in Nigeria Lagos who shared their stories. This work is supported by the Institute for Urban Studies. Key references include reports on informal economies in sub-Saharan Africa and automotive industry reviews specific to Nigeria Lagos.
