The role of the optometrist has evolved significantly over the past two decades, transitioning from a primary focus on refractive error correction to comprehensive ocular health management. In Netherlands Amsterdam, this evolution is particularly pronounced due to the city's status as a global hub for medical research and healthcare innovation. The dense urban population of Netherlands Amsterdam presents unique public health challenges, including high rates of digital eye strain among the working professional demographic and an aging population susceptible to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma.

This poster presentation outlines a multi-center study conducted across various clinics in Netherlands Amsterdam. The primary objective was to evaluate the efficacy of integrated optometric care models versus traditional referral pathways in detecting early-stage ocular pathology. By leveraging advanced diagnostic technologies such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and AI-driven retinal imaging, this study aims to demonstrate how optometrists serve as crucial gatekeepers in the Dutch healthcare system.


The study utilized a prospective, observational cohort design involving 1,500 patients recruited from five distinct optometry practices located within the municipality of Netherlands Amsterdam. The demographic distribution was stratified to ensure representation across age groups (18–40, 41–65, and 65+ years) and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Participants underwent a comprehensive eye examination that included visual acuity testing, intraocular pressure measurement, dilated fundus examination using wide-field retinal cameras, and OCT imaging of the macula and optic nerve head. Data collection was standardized across all sites to minimize inter-examiner variability. The study specifically focused on two key metrics: (1) the prevalence of undiagnosed ocular diseases in patients presenting with routine complaints, and (2) patient satisfaction scores regarding the continuity of care provided by optometrists in Netherlands Amsterdam.

Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Board at University Medical Centre Amsterdam. Informed consent was secured from all participants, ensuring compliance with GDPR regulations prevalent in the Netherlands.


The analysis of data collected from the Netherlands Amsterdam cohort yielded significant insights into the diagnostic capabilities of modern optometric practice. Key findings include:

In the context of Netherlands Amsterdam, where healthcare efficiency is paramount due to high population density and resource constraints, empowering optometrists with advanced diagnostic tools can alleviate pressure on ophthalmology departments. The study demonstrates that when optometrists are equipped with OCT and digital imaging capabilities, they can effectively triage patients, ensuring that those requiring surgical or specialized medical intervention are referred promptly.

Furthermore, the cultural diversity of Netherlands Amsterdam necessitates a patient-centered approach to eye care. Our findings suggest that culturally competent communication strategies employed by optometrists significantly enhance patient understanding of diagnosis and treatment options. This is particularly relevant in a city with such a multicultural populace.


This poster presentation concludes that the modern optometrist in Netherlands Amsterdam is an indispensable component of public health infrastructure. The shift towards comprehensive, technology-driven care models has resulted in earlier detection of sight-threatening diseases and improved patient outcomes. To sustain and enhance these benefits, we recommend further investment in continuing education for optometrists regarding advanced imaging technologies and digital health integration.

Future research should explore the long-term economic impact of optometer-led screening programs on the Dutch national healthcare budget. By establishing robust evidence-based practices, we can advocate for policy changes that support expanded roles for optometrists in Netherlands Amsterdam and beyond.
