Introduction: Visual Health Landscape in Peru Lima
The Republic of Peru, and specifically its capital city, Lima, faces a complex public health scenario regarding visual care. As one of the most densely populated urban centers in South America, Lima serves as a critical hub for medical research and healthcare delivery. However, the rapid urbanization and socioeconomic disparities inherent to Peru Lima present unique challenges to the optical profession.
Historically, vision care in Peru has been fragmented between traditional opticians who dispense glasses and ophthalmologists who perform surgeries. The distinct professional identity of the Optometrist, a primary eye care provider capable of diagnosing ocular diseases, managing contact lenses, and prescribing corrective measures, is still gaining widespread recognition within the Peruvian healthcare framework.
This poster presentation aims to elucidate the critical importance of expanding the scope of practice for Optometrists in Peru Lima. By integrating advanced optometric services into primary care networks, we can address the growing epidemic of myopia, digital eye strain, and age-related macular degeneration among the population.
