The Evolving Role of the Social Worker within the Socio-Political Landscape of Iran, Tehran
This study utilizes a mixed-methods approach to assess the efficacy of social work interventions in Tehran. Qualitative data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with fifty licensed Social Workers currently practicing in various districts of Tehran, ranging from affluent western zones to underprivileged eastern peripheries. Quantitative data includes statistical analysis of service utilization rates over the past five years provided by local municipal health and social services departments.
Data Collection
Data collection focused on identifying key pain points in the delivery of social services. Themes identified included bureaucratic hurdles, lack of inter-agency coordination, and the psychological burden placed on Social Workers dealing with trauma cases. Furthermore, focus groups were conducted with service users to gauge their perception of care quality and accessibility.
Analytical Framework
The findings are interpreted through the lens of ecological systems theory, which posits that individual behavior is influenced by interactions with broader social structures. This framework allows us to contextualize the role of the Social Worker not just as an individual counselor, but as a mediator between the client and their environment. Special attention is paid to how cultural factors in Tehran influence help-seeking behaviors.
The study reveals that Social Workers in Tehran are increasingly required to function as case managers and resource brokers rather than solely clinicians. There is a notable gap between the training received by social work students in universities and the practical realities faced on the ground in Tehran's complex urban landscape. Additionally, there is a growing recognition of the need for culturally adapted interventions that respect Islamic values while promoting gender equity and social justice.
