In recent years, the Federal District (Distrito Federal) has witnessed a surge in complex medical cases. The concentration of referral hospitals means that surgeons here often deal with pathologies seen nationwide, yet they must do so within the constraints of Brazil's Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde - SUS). Understanding this dichotomy is crucial for any academic discourse regarding surgical practice in the capital.
