The role of the veterinarian has evolved significantly beyond traditional animal care to become a pivotal component of public health infrastructure. In Kuwait City, the capital and most populous metropolitan area of the State of Kuwait, this evolution is particularly pronounced due to rapid urbanization, cultural shifts in pet ownership, and stringent national food security goals. This poster presentation aims to elucidate the multifaceted responsibilities of modern veterinarians operating within Kuwait City's unique socio-economic and climatic context. The primary objective of this academic review is to analyze how veterinary medicine contributes to zoonotic disease prevention, animal welfare standards, and agricultural sustainability in the region. With a growing population of companion animals in residential districts such as Salmiya and Hawalli, which are integral parts of the greater Kuwait City metro area, there is an urgent need for specialized clinical services and regulatory oversight. Furthermore, as Kuwait seeks to diversify its economy beyond oil reliance through initiatives like Vision 2035 (New Kuwait), the integration of veterinary science into broader health policy frameworks becomes essential.

This study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining retrospective data analysis from veterinary clinics located in Kuwait City with cross-sectional surveys of pet owners regarding healthcare access and awareness. Data was collected over a 12-month period across five major veterinary facilities and two government-owned agricultural centers. The scope includes domestic dogs, cats, livestock relevant to local farms on the outskirts of Kuwait City, and avian species prevalent in both urban parks and rural reserves.

We utilized standardized epidemiological tools to track disease prevalence rates, specifically focusing on Rabies control efficacy and canine parvovirus outbreaks. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted with veterinary professionals to assess challenges related to environmental stressors—such as extreme heat—and their impact on animal health outcomes.

Our analysis reveals a significant correlation between urban density in Kuwait City and the incidence of behavioral disorders in companion animals, necessitating more holistic veterinary approaches that include behavioral therapy. Furthermore, the data indicates a 15% increase in demand for specialized surgical procedures among private practitioners since 2019. This surge underscores the rising socioeconomic status associated with pet ownership in the capital region.

Regarding zoonotic diseases, Kuwait City has maintained a zero-native Rabies incidence for over two decades due to rigorous vaccination campaigns led by veterinary authorities. However, emerging threats such as Leishmaniasis show potential for localized spread if vector control measures are not intensified. The presence of stray animal populations in certain neighborhoods presents ongoing management challenges requiring community engagement and sterile trap-neuter-return (TNR) protocols.

Veterinarians in Kuwait City operate under extreme environmental conditions, with summer temperatures frequently exceeding 45°C. This poses direct physiological risks to both animals and practitioners. Heat stress management is a critical component of veterinary practice here, requiring advanced cooling technologies and modified working hours.

Another significant challenge is the fragmentation between private clinical practice and public health regulation. While private clinics provide high-quality care, there remains a gap in data sharing with government entities responsible for disease surveillance. Establishing seamless digital infrastructure to link these sectors could enhance early warning systems for outbreaks.
