The purpose of this engagement is to support the University of Khartoum's Department of Physics and Astronomy in advancing observational research, developing local astrophysical curricula, and establishing a permanent optical and radio astronomy observation program within the Khartoum metropolitan area and its surrounding rural sites.

The Astronomer proposed for this role will hold a minimum of a Doctorate in Astrophysics or a closely related field, with no fewer than eight (8) years of post-doctoral research experience in stellar evolution, exoplanetary detection, or high-energy astrophysics. The candidate must demonstrate proven capability in operating both optical and radio telescope instruments, as well as proficiency in data reduction pipelines such as IRAF, CASA, and Python-based astrometric software.

The Astronomer engaged under this Quotation Estimate shall perform the following duties within Sudan Khartoum and designated observation sites in the surrounding region:

  • Conduct a minimum of 120 clear-sky observation nights per annum using the 600mm Cassegrain reflector and the 4-metre single-dish radio telescope installed at the El-Obeid Field Station, approximately 180 km south of Khartoum.
  • Develop and deliver a full undergraduate and graduate course sequence in Observational Astronomy, Stellar Astrophysics, and Cosmology for the academic years 2025/2026 and 2026/2027.
  • Supervise a minimum of four (4) Master's theses and two (2) Doctoral dissertations annually, with a focus on topics relevant to the African sky, including variable star photometry and transient event detection.
  • Establish and maintain a local astronomical data archive in Khartoum, ensuring compliance with the International Astronomical Union (IAU) data-sharing protocols.
  • Organize and lead at least two (2) public astronomy outreach events per year in Khartoum, targeting schools, community centres, and the general public to promote scientific literacy.
  • Collaborate with the Sudanese National Meteorological Authority to integrate astronomical observations with atmospheric and climate research programmes.
