Late SURENDRA JHA 'SUMAN' (1913) was a great scholar of Maithili and Sanskrit who also represented Darbhanga constituency from Janata Party in 1977. His father Late Bhuwaneshwar Jha himself was a great scholar. He was Vice-President of Bihar Pradesh Jan Sangh till March 1977. He remained Chief Editor of 'Mithila, Mihir" Darbhanga 1935\u201452, 'Swadesh' (Monthly) 1942, Swadesh' (Daily)1956 and 'Vaidehi', 1962\u201466. He was Lecturer of Maithili at CM. College (1953\u201472), Reader, and Head of the Department of Maithili at L. N. Mithila University 1972\u201474; Member, Darbhanga.
Special interests: Study of different languages and scripts, journalism and literary writing.
Accomplishments in letters, art and science: Recipient of Sahitya Akademy Award, 1971.
Publications: around 100 creative and research works in Maithili prominent among these are : 'Payaswini', 'Pratipada', 'Archana', 'Antarnad', 'SawanBhadan', 'Ankawali', 'Kavinvatika', 'Anugitanjali', 'Shringarhar', 'Damayanti' (Epic), 'Anyoktika', 'Prakritishatak'; Translations : 'Purush Pariksha', 'Kumar Sambhava' etc.
he had formed Navratna Gosthi an association of nine jewels of Maithili literature. Legendary Maithili author and poet Pandit Chandranath Mishra 'Amar' has been one of his true follower.
