The most remarked-upon material used at the Mongol court was nasij, or "cloth of gold," a dazzling textile with both pattern and background in gold and only the design's fine outlines rendered in monochrome silk. Nasij was woven in the lampas technique, an innovation from the West that reached China as a result of the mass movement of weavers from the eastern Iranian world to China during the Mongol period.
