In the center of the triptych stands a tall courtesan, with an attendant holding a large umbrella over her head. The three figures on the right emphasize the winter cold: one holds a heater, a second blows on her fingers to warm them, and a third adjusts her sleeves for maximum warmth. By contrast, the figures on the left, who are rolling a large snowball, create an atmosphere of fun. The overall composition of the triptych is unified, with three figures per panel, but each sheet can also stand alone. Toyokuni, the most prominent and popular artist of the Utagawa school, produced a large number of prints in a variety of themes, including beauties and Kabuki actors.
