American version Peking Duck Soup, prepared by Donald Nicholson-Smith, was also released at Cannes on the same day. Completed a few days after the arrest of Ms Mao (Jiang Qing), and her "Gang of Four", this film was a milestone in the explanation of the "anti-cultural counter-revolution" in the line of Simon Leys' Chairman Mao New Clothes. It has been also a milestone in innovative documentary film methodology, though not really emulated by later film directors.
