Two groups of young children delight in the possibilities for adventure offered by a summer river and a winter snowfall. The boys of summer try their skill at ferrying one another about in a small boat, while the winter squad braves uneven footing to shepherd an ever-larger snowball across a sparkling white field. Inspired by a Chinese painting tradition of depicting imperial children at play in palace gardens, this pair of screens subverts and updates the genre with its sparse, graphic landscapes. At the same time, the bright polychrome of the figures and the sprinkled golden clouds hint at the ostentation exuded by the Chinese and Japanese prototypes for these screens.The painter \u014cshin was the third head of the Maruyama school, founded by Maruyama \u014cky\u014d (1790\u20131838). The pine trees in these screens bear a resemblance to those seen in paintings by \u014cshin's adoptive father, Maruyama \u014czui (1776\u20131829), the eldest son of \u014cky\u014d. The style of the faces of the young boys may derive from that of Komai Genki (1747\u20131797), a pupil of \u014cky\u014d with whom \u014cshin also trained.
