At first glance, this embroidered textile resembles a still-life painting. The accoutrements of a scholar's studio that are pictured here include a brushpot containing a flywhisk, brushes, a scroll, a folding fan, and ruyi, a fungus-shaped decoration; a small container for water; an inkstone; and a brush rest. The large vase at the right is filled with flowers, some of which have petals rendered in small pearls, a highly decorative note.The embroiderer took great pains with the surfaces of the scholar's objects; we can even guess what materials are represented.
