The representation of courtly life and activities was a very popular subject for artists working in the medieval Islamic period. Within this setting, a particularly favored subject was the depiction of musicians, such as the lute player seen here. The musician is covered with a turquoise glaze that was accented with gold overpainting, traces of which still remain on the surface. It is often difficult to identify the intended function of such figures, but in this case the object was clearly intended for use as a container for liquids. The long earrings, or ribbons, may have been used to hang this container.
