This Noh costume features a delicate pattern of autumn grasses-wild pinks, chrysanthemums, bush clover, Chinese bellflowers, and miscanthus grass-on a deep red ground. In the Noh play Aoi no ue, based on an episode from The Tale of Genji, a costume of this type actually takes the title role. It lies folded on the stage, representing Genji's pregnant wife, Aoi, as she is repeatedly attacked by the jealous spirit of Lady Rokujo, a proud woman who is one of Genji's lovers. After giving birth to Genji's son, Aoi dies from the attacks.
