The inscription on the brush indicates that it was made during the reign of the Qianlong Emperor and most likely in a workshop at court, either for use there or to be given as a gift. It is interesting to note that, in the eighteenth century, ivory carvers working in the south were brought to the court at Beijing to carve lacquer: this set may have been produced by an individual who was skilled at working in both media. The brush is stored in a luxurious carved red lacquer box decorated with bats (symbols of good fortune) flying over waves.
