Khety, the first recorded royal treasurer (\u201coverseer of what is sealed\u201d) of Mentuhotep II (ca. 2051\u20132000 B.C.), built a tomb high up in the cliffs at Deir el-Bahri. These reliefs derive from the tomb\u2019s entrance passage, which was lined with decorated limestone blocks.The fragments in this group are from a scene of Khety seated beneath an elaborate roof, his left arm slung over the side of an armchair. The complete image might have shown Khety sitting under a canopy, receiving offerings. However, latticework roofs such as this one were most often depicted as part of magnificent carrying chairs in which high officials were ferried on stylish outings. In funerary contexts, these scenes sometimes represented the tomb owner\u2019s visits to the construction site of his tomb. Such scenes were accompanied by texts that stressed the workmen\u2019s satisfaction with their pay.
