A great titmouse is about to alight on a branch of pomegranate in bloom. The use of bright green and orange-red pigments was characteristic of Kano artists inspired by Chinese-style bird-and-flower paintings of the Ming dynasty. The painting was part of a set, perhaps once mounted on a small screen. Seals reading \u201cM\u014d -in,\u201d associated with the artist Kano Yukinobu, are impressed at the left. The work is mounted in a fashion typical for Ming bird-and-flower paintings, with an ornate textile border above and below the painting. A more subtle figured silk, also in Ming style, forms the main part of the mounting.
