Women's court or audience robes (chaofu) characteristically include an L-shaped seam between the collar and underarm fastenings, which is emphasized by a stiff binding; epaulette-like projections at the shoulders, and upper-arm sleeve bands cut from a separate piece of silk. This robe also features an attached collar.Surviving examples of women's formal court robes are rare: not many were made, as women were not often included in court ceremonies. The dragons brocaded on the sleeve bands indicate that this robe was originally intended for a high-ranking woman at court. However, like most extant robes, this one does not conform exactly to the published regulations; for example, we cannot confirm that the color of this robe corresponds to those named in the regulations.
