Emerging out of a tomb sealed with a large stone and guarded by watchmen, Jesus miraculously rises from the dead. His face shines forth and the wounds on his head, hands, feet, and chest glow bright white. The guards shook and \u201cbecame as dead men,\u201d Matthew says, at the sight of the risen Jesus, falling backwards in abject terror.

Glowing more brilliantly than the guards\u2019 lanterns, an angel visible just inside the tomb at right will later reassure Mary Magdalene and the other holy women that Jesus has risen. The angel is accompanied by others of his brilliant company, who are seated in an inner chamber of the tomb.
