"A Bright New Land"
by: Wes Robert Ward
Two buildings had collapsed, he thought time had relapsed. He was walking along and suddenly it started raining and hailing metal and concrete and glass. And he knew that this wasn't in the forecast.
At first he thought otherwise as he opened his umbrella, but realized soon after his umbrella would not save him. It had saved him most of his life, yet that September day before the almighty afterlife he knew all that fell would cut through it like a knife.
Steel girders fell on him that day, sad to say, crushing the life out of him. Pound by brutal pound, like a massive mountain falling into the sea of serenity. And as he laid beneath an avalanche of debris, he came to realize that he was dying. Tears shed, he bled, fading away, never to see another sunset, never to see his wife, kids, pet.
And as he was dying he could not understand why those buildings fell. Fell falling like a beanstalk in some fairy tale, not that it should have mattered. So he simply guessed he'll have answers as soon as possible from his maker after being in this back breaker.
And as he was slowly dying, he noticed another one dying near him. She was scared and crying in agonizing pain and he noticed she had the same death on her face as he felt on his own. Sewn and etched upon their face was white death, as white as white would come for blood was thicker than water and their blood mingled together.
He whispered as he held her hand, "Close your eyes, my dear, Angels are near."
She did and he did too. Falling, falling, falling into darkness as their blood soaked the earth that gave them birth. Like a settling feather they died together, no more sand, hand in hand.
… then light, such light, light as bright that such a light can be. Light, healing light, light that can only be so grand. A light that takes your hand...
Opening their eyes together, smiling and laughing, they were in a bright new land, still hand in hand.
The End. 👫
