Part one of three. The handwritten original manuscript by Civil War era author Edmund Kirke (real name James Gilmore) of his experience in Camp Douglas. Kirke was well known and respected writer and interviewed both Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis for Atlantic Monthly magazine. Camp Douglas was a prison camp known as the "Andersonville of the North" located in Chicago, Illinois. The story "Three Days at Camp Douglas" was published in Young Folks magazine, May 1865. James Gilmore was born and raised in Franklin, Massachusetts(page 4 and a crossed out version of page 5 are out of order)
