Coliseum St School, B1, May, 1956I am fifth from the left in the front row, and on the left end is a kid named Mark. For the life of me I can\u2019t remember his last name. At the left end of the second row is my friend Tommy Nakamura (or at least I think that\u2019s him). In the top row, second from the left is Arlen Peters. The third child from the right in the top row is David Cunningham.
David Cunningham played a crucial roll in my development as a decent person. (Fuck, I hope I\u2019m a decent guy.) He had six brothers and sisters, more than any other kid I knew, at least that well. My family was pretty much middle class (no thanks to Joseph McCarthy, but that\u2019s another story). David was, I think, the poorest person I knew at that point in my life. Sometimes we stayed at each other\u2019s house for dinner and overnight. They were christian, saying grace before meals. That alone was something I knew of but hand never experienced. My folks told me to be respectful. I think I was. Meals were not at all what I was accustomed to. When I stayed overnight, I discovered his siblings all slept in homemade bunkbeds. Nothing wrong with homemade, but again I had not experienced anything quite like it. All his brothers and sisters seemed really nice, as did his folks, but shit fucksticks they were poor. He was always enthused to stay with us and my folks liked him a lot.
It was good getting to know him. I hope he\u2019s had a decent life. I think in this picture he kind of looks like Opie, Ron Howard\u2019s character on the Andy Griffith Show.
