"Of all the classes I have taken at this one has done wonders for me. I did not have to focus on memorization, or terms and philosophies. I was given the opportunity to grow creatively, and discover who I am in this process. I have been in a rut for a long time. I am so used to writing APA form papers, with citations and scientific language. It has been rooted in my mind to limit descriptive words, and be concise. I had to challenge myself for this class. I had classified myself as this hardcore academic, with little creativity left in me. It is crazy to think, that in high school, I lived for poetry. I would wake up at night and open my notes app on my phone and jot down my poetic thoughts. But before this class, I didn’t have room for creativity.

Through this class, I got my creativity back. It was hard at first. I didn’t know how deep to go, or how in detail to get. I was afraid of judgement and ridicule, like my poems weren’t poems or good enough to be read. I have been through a lot in my life, and I used to be so open writing about it. It took me some time, but I believe I am gaining back my creativity, and openness of my life and life events. I am more willing to talk about my struggles and what I know. I still prefer to write in a freestyle, and to just have a stream of consciousness, but I do appreciate all the fine forms of poetry, and how important they are to history

.
The process of editing my poems was interesting. I at first took constructive criticism harshly. I thought people hated what I wrote or that they were secretly making fun of it. However, I soon knew this was a safe space to share our thoughts. I began understanding the comments and how they could help my poetry. I appreciate the comments from the entire class, whether it was “great job!” or “maybe you could change this up!” Regardless, this class has been a great experience and I gained so much more than a few credits from it.
