Flags were used by the Egyptians in the form of standards 4,000 years ago. The standard consisted of a pole with a totemic device (carved figure of an animal god) at the top to signify a geographical province. These standards were usually mounted on ships, often with strips of cloth attached to the pole beneath the emblem for decorative purposes.
