After passing Xiao Luoshui and following the road as it climbed higher and higher, we reached a special spot. I followed the women as they went toward the lake, away from the road, onto a steep bluff. "This is Lugu Lake's Mama!" several women explained to me, grinning. Here was the source of the lake. (None of the others I met later -- tourists from Chinese cities -- knew of its motherly attributes.)
At this sacred site, the women took turns putting on the Moso clothing and posing for photos. They also dropped old jewelry, incense, and seeds down the bluff, and strung prayer flags.
