Jim Conley Draft Card, Convict Record, Photos and Information About Him

James Jim Conley (1884-1952), was a janitor at the National Pencil Company from 1911-1913. Conley was enlisted by Leo Frank to move the dead body of Mary Phagan from the metal room--situated at the back of the second floor of the national pencil company--down two floors to the cellar, and burn the body. Conley refused, and Leo Frank took the $200 back that he had bribed him with to cremate the body in the furnace. After Conley rejected the job of destroying the evidence, Leo Frank had him write some murder notes, which where then placed next to Mary Phagan's dead body in the cellar.

At the Mary Phagan murder trial where Leo Frank was defendant, his attorneys oscillated back and forth between trying to suggest Newt Lee and Jim Conley where the culprits.

Jim Conley was arrested in 1919, trying to break into a Negro pharmacy to steal a bottle of whiskey, he was sentenced to 20 years, but released after 15 on good behavior.
