1 - Nanny and David - This was taken in the driveway of our house at 3820 Virginia Rd. I remember Ada (aka, Nanny) as generally a pretty severe woman. Unusually, she’s smiling in this shot. The brick to her right is the chimney of the house. That’s the garage in the background. I have vague memories of the car in the driveway, but clear and vivid memories of that white fence on the right. Weird.

I also remember that bicycle. You can see, perhaps, that I can’t quite reach the peddles yet, so Horace made blocks, shortening the reach. I’m not sure I was able to ride that bicycle yet. Nanny seems to be holding the handlebars and the kickstand is down. I think the bike was dark red. You can see the horn and speedometer!

2 - L > R - One S, Nanny, David, the other S. Based on nothing (really, nothing), I’m guessing that’s Susan next to me. I wonder what they thought about the saddle shoes.

This was taken in our backyard on Virginia Rd. We’re sitting at the back of the yard, facing the back of the house. To the right is a swing set. You can see part of one rear leg. If we could move further to the right, we would see the incinerator. I remember our dad burning the trash in it and how different it smelled than burning wood.

To the left in the picture you can see a slab trimmed with brick. A tricycle is on it. There’s also an extension ladder leaning against the wall behind us. There’s a hole in the slab with a large, deciduous tree. I don’t know the variety. It was broad and spreading. Horace built me a tree house in that tree. On hot nights, I loved sleeping up there. Later, in the corner of the yard and slab, we built a pigeon coop and flight pen. I raised and raced pigeons for I think 3 years. I think the pigeons would have happened in 1958 or ’59, the year (or year after) the Ss left for college.

That’s more like the Nanny I remember!

I’m guessing this picture was taken in 1953, which would make my sisters 12. Big as shit our mom was still dressing them alike. I don’t think I had smacked the dog with the hammer yet. Maybe that’s the hammer I’m holding! Naw, probably not. Looks like a toy gun.

3 - Nanny and the two Ss, I’m guessing pre-me. That secretary is in Sheila’s house. I wonder if the other sister had a matching bangle (or watch?)? I don’t remember that room at all. Perhaps it’s the house on Chesapeake. I don’t remember that table, either.

That’s the Nanny I remember, her mouth straight across and not much of an expression. Proper Victorian (Edwardian?) British gran. In America.

I think this is prior to my birth or just after and I was an infant. Of course, our mother might argue that I still am, but could an infant organize the hardcopy photographs, do all the scanning, type all this, etc., etc. Hell no. She would concede literal-boy was correct. Shit, then I would have to take her point.

Most definitely the twinsy look, and in today’s parlance, hand-crafted (by Ida).

4 - Yep, that’s pretty much how I remember Nanny. I believe this was taken in the living room of our house on Virginia Rd. Everything is so familiar. That couch may have been a hide-a-bed.
