U.S. Futsal squad heads to Brazilian tournament.

(Thursday, October 8, 1998) -- The United States national Futsal team, which competes internationally in the world's five-a-side game, departs Saturday for Brazil and the second Rio de Janeiro Futsal Tournament.

The event marks the U.S. squad's second trip to Brazil in 1998, following a third-place finish at the Mundialito de Futsal in January.

The four-team, round robin tournament will be played from October 15-18. The U.S. will play Belgium on October 15, three-time world champion Brazil on October 16 and the Netherlands on October 17. Following the round-robin phase, the top two teams will play for the championship on October 18.

U.S. head coach Keith Tozer finalized his 12-player roster for the tournament today. His squad features three-time indoor Defender of the Year Sean Bowers and high scoring midfielder Goran Hunjak, both veterans of the 1996 Futsal World Championship, and current members of the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer.

The team also includes indoor veteran Rusty Troy, a former Major Indoor Soccer League All-Star.

In the team's only other competition of the year -- at the Mundialito de Futsal in Brazil -- the Americans finished with a 2-1-1 record, with victories over Italy and Belgium and a spirited 4-4 draw versus Argentina. The Americans then lost to eventual champion Brazil.

Futsal is played on a basketball-style court, but without walls, in contrast to American indoor soccer. Teams field five players, typically four "field" players and a goalkeeper, and can substitute these players in and out of the match at any time.
