Oral mucositis is one of the most common, debilitating complications of cancer treatments.
Mucositis refers to the inflammatory changes that occur in the mucosal tissue lining the entire gastrointestinal tract (from mouth up to the anus) in response to cancer treatments.
The lining that covers the inside of the mouth is called the oral mucosa. It is sensitive and quite vulnerable to the effects of cancer treatments like radiation and chemotherapy due to its rapidly dividing epithelial cells.
These changes primarily involve reddening, swelling and painful ulceration of the mucosa.
