A poor man's gift to his sweetheart, likely purchased and given in England, late 19th century. Sometime after Isaac (my Zade) gave this to Ada (my Bube), they, along with eleven other couples, moved to Ontario, Canada, purchased property and attempted to form a commune. It failed, and my grandparents emigrated to the United States, where my mom, Ida, was born.
I just recently learned from my sister Flynn (the Kiwi previously known as Susan) that our maternal grandparents weren't actually married until our mom was about 20. I like that a lot! Our mom always admonished us not to marry until we had lived with our potential partner for at least three years. Good advice.
To be technically correct, my mom, not Ida, was born. Completely unknown to our mom until she applied for social security, her name was actually Rosa Handelsman! And, of course, she had had a social security card as long as there had been social security, but in the name of Ida Meyers. After the social security revelation, she said she did remember being called Rosa as a child, but by that time it had become a distant memory.
I find this simple piece of paper so moving it nearly brings me to tears.
