This entry shares media related to the 'Rengo' prototype experimental exercise by Andrew Gryf Paterson, Vladimir Gekoff and Pete Gomes on the 21st July 2003, at the 1st international Locative Media Workshop in Liep\u0101ja-Karosta, organised by RIXC Centre for New Media Culture. The exercise took place among the abandoned residential housing blocks of Karosta, a former imperial and Soviet naval military base and closed city on the Western Latvian coastline.
Two media camera-phones (Nokia 3650) were used dubbed 'Silver' and 'Gold' due to the colour of the casing distinguishing them. Mobile images were sent in relay to each other device using Bluetooth wireless frequency within 10-15 metres of each other. The images here are numbered and sequenced according to the image-swapping. One of the mobile devices was owned by RIXC, and the other by Paterson, who was sponsored by a Leverhulme Trust Study-abroad Studentship from 2003-2005.
"The international workshop entitled "Locative media" focusing on GPS, mapping and positioning technologies took place from July 16 - 26, 2003 at the K@2 Culture and Information Centre on an abandoned military installation in Liepaja on the coast of the Baltic Sea. The workshop brought together an international group of artists and researchers interested in notions of mobile geography aiming to explore how wireless networking impacts upon notions of space time and social organization."
