Unlike upholstered furniture in the West, chairs in China historically were covered only temporarily with textiles-like this velvet chair strip, designed and woven specifically for the purpose. As is typical of chair strips, the length is divided into segments, with a different design for each part of the chair being covered-the front legs, seat, and back-as well as a short segment that hangs behind the chair. This example is crowded with ornamentation: the pair of lions that would have covered the chair's front legs gives way to a lotus medallion for the seat, and the long segment with phoenixes and tree peonies would have both decorated the back of the chair and hung behind it. The entire design is surrounded by a floral border.
