The delicate embroidered design of this rare kimono (\u200akosode) was inspired by the natural scenery of Japan\u2019s coast, its beaches strewn with shells and sea grass. The foundation fabric, woven with floral motifs on a background of fretwork, was imported from China. In Japan the white cloth was then resist-dyed to achieve the effect of irregular sandbanks, on which marine motifs were embroidered.
