Be warned, if you have a sensitive stomach, or whatever, there are vaguely bloody and graphic pictures. The first picture, of me in the building skinning a goat, is at Pilgrim Farm. I think the VW bug, center left, is the green 1968 I got from my sister Susan. I don’t know what that other vehicle with the hood up is. Looks like a beer bottle behind me. One thing I can be dead certain of is that I did not drink that beer. I hate beer and always have. I’m sure I’d like it if it only tasted good! HA!
Still at Pilgrim Farm, on the other side of the road, behind the vehicles, is Wilson Creek. On the other side of the creek is a stone, one room cabin. You had to walk across a cedar log bridge to reach the cabin. Will’s wife Vi was born in that cabin. She never lived more than 5 miles from it. She was well into her 90s when she died.
Of the remaining two pictures, it should be obvious which one comes first. These were taken by Maury King.
These were taken at Will Slayton’s. The corrugated metal fence in both pictures surrounded Will’s junkyard. Goats are relatively small, and I got to the point that if I didn’t have a doubletree handy, I would do much of the initial gutting on the ground, then hang the rest just to skin. The majority of the goats I butchered were young wethers (castrated males). Not my absolute favorite flesh, but good. :)
For me, the killing of an animal is the most difficult moment of butchering job. I strongly “dislike” goats. I’d say “hate,” but I don’t want to be TOO incendiary. Juuuuuuust incendiary enough. I used to tell my friends that my philosophy was the only good goat is one cut, wrapped and in the freezer. Goats are SUCH a huge pain in the ass. (Sorry to all the folks who love goats.) I butchered more of them than any other animals, probably because I told my friends I would butcher their goats free. HA! Pigs required payment (not necessarily money). Of course, goats are also so much quicker and easier to cut and wrap.
